This is Why I Hate Meetings

So here's my problem with work meetings, I just can't handle them. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm usually all for teamwork and collaboration. But when it comes to these pointless gatherings that do nothing but waste time, I want to break out in hives. Let’s set the scene: It's a Monday morning and we're supposed to be discussing our projects and progress for the week. There are around ten of us in this room, all with different roles from across departments. And as usual, our boss starts by going over every single detail about last week’s sales numbers before getting down to what we actually need to discuss. Now I'm not a morning person, everyone knows this, and so here I am, barely awake and trying my best not to yawn or look too bored. But the real kicker was when John from IT spoke up with some question about whether our marketing team is tracking sales in real time on social media. To be honest, that’s been automated for months now, but instead of saying anything useful like “Why don’t you just check the dashboard yourself?” I end up just nodding and pretending to take notes. And then it happens again with Sally from HR bringing up a concern about how we're handling client communications. It’s all so tedious. By this point in the meeting, my mind is wandering to all sorts of places, like planning what to eat for lunch or wondering if I’ve left any important emails unopened. But here's where it gets interesting. When it was finally my turn to speak up, I couldn’t take it anymore. So while everyone else is still on board with these seemingly critical discussions, I pipe in: “Look, we all have real work to do and deadlines to meet. Can't we just get straight to the point?” Of course, this didn’t go over well. The meeting went silent for a moment as people glanced at me oddly, but then they started backpedaling with explanations about why each topic was important. And there I am, feeling defiant and slightly guilty for rocking the boat. Now, I'm not saying I would do it exactly like that again next time. Maybe I’d wait till everyone else has spoken up before me, or maybe even whisper it to our boss privately after the meeting. But you know what? At least I’ll have said my piece and vented a bit of frustration. That's why meetings are the worst. They just sap all your energy without giving much in return.
