When My Study Group Fell Apart Over Snacks

I'm really sorry I did this. It was such a small thing and yet it ended up ruining our whole group study dynamic for the rest of the semester. You see, we started out great - five of us, all with different majors but one common goal: acing our final exams in May. We met twice a week in my dorm room for two-hour sessions where we reviewed notes, solved practice problems, and even had some fun debates about class topics. Our group chats were filled with inside jokes and memes. It was great. But then came the snack issue. I like to eat when I study - it helps me focus. So every session, I'd bring a bowl of pretzels or chips for everyone. Sometimes, we all brought our own snacks. The first few weeks were fine; everyone seemed happy with whatever they got. Then one day, someone didn't show up with their usual bag of M&Ms and another person had to share some leftover pizza slices. That's when things started changing. The whispers began - about how I was always the one bringing food, or that it wasn't fair that everyone else shared what they brought but sometimes got less than others. It made me feel guilty, like my snacks were causing problems. Plus, I noticed fewer and fewer people actually showed up with their own snacks as time went on. The final straw came at our last session before finals week when one of the group members bluntly said she felt bad asking us to split her granola bars because it never seemed fair that I always had something prepared for everyone. She was right, but hearing those words out loud made me realize how much my snacks were impacting our studying environment. We ended up not meeting again until after finals. When we did gather back together to celebrate surviving the semester, there was an awkward silence when someone mentioned we'd done well despite not studying together lately. It just reminded me of all those wasted weeks leading up to our exams. And now I'm stuck thinking about it months later because here's the thing: while everyone else seemed annoyed at first by my snacks, in retrospect, I think they also appreciated having something there when we worked late into the night cramming before tests. Maybe we just needed a more equal system instead of me always being the default provider. Anyway, I don't know if this confession helps anyone but me process what happened back then. If it does, great. But mostly, it's here because I feel bad about how such tiny details can affect big things in unexpected ways.
