I Told a Little Lie to Get Out of Math Class

So here's the thing. Last Thursday, I had math class right after lunch, and honestly, it was one of those days where everything seemed so boring. My stomach was growling because I skipped breakfast, and my head was all fuzzy from trying not to fall asleep during study hall earlier. And then there’s Mrs. Thompson. She’s a great teacher for most kids, but her math lessons are like climbing Mount Everest for me. Anyway, as we started the warm-up problems, my brain just shut down completely. I thought, ‘Ugh, I can’t do this right now. This is going to be so awful.’ Just then, my phone buzzed with a text from my friend Lily saying she was waiting at our usual spot outside school for me after class because we wanted to catch up before hanging out later that evening. Now, here’s where it gets tricky. I had this sudden urge to skip the class and meet up with her right then and there. But what if Mrs. Thompson caught me? So, my mind raced through possible excuses in a split second. ‘I need to go home quickly because my little sister is sick at daycare,’ popped into my head. The timing was perfect as Lily texted again saying she needed to be somewhere after lunch but would wait until I got there. It felt like fate or something. Then, just when I thought no one else in class was paying attention to me, our resident tattletale, Rachel, noticed that my phone had gone off and informed Mrs. Thompson. Now comes the part where I feel a bit guilty. Instead of owning up to it and saying, ‘Oh whoops, sorry Mrs. T,’ which would’ve gotten me an after-school detention for sure, I went with my preconceived story about having to pick up my sister. It was easy because she’s younger than me anyway. Mrs. Thompson, bless her heart, let me off the hook and told me not to skip class like that again. Of course, I agreed but really thought about how I could get out of math next time just as easily. But then this nagging feeling hit me hard. What if my sister was actually sick? What kind of big sister am I for lying to cover up skipping a boring class? Since Thursday, every time someone mentions my little sister, a knot forms in my stomach and guilt creeps up inside me. It’s one of those moments when you think, ‘Was it really worth it?’
