Why I Didn't Let My Little Brother Have a Phone Until He Was 13

When my brother was in seventh grade, he was really eager to get his first phone. All of his friends had them and were texting each other all day long. They would brag about the latest apps they got or how many followers their Instagram account had. My brother kept pestering me for a phone every single weekend until I finally gave him an ultimatum: he needed to show maturity, responsibility, and restraint before getting his own device. He was twelve at the time, and in my mind, the ideal age to start using technology responsibly was around thirteen or fourteen. At first, he argued with me about it, insisting that all of his friends had phones already and that I was being unfair by not letting him have one too. But I stood firm on my decision because I didn't want him exposed to all the potential dangers associated with phone usage before he was ready for them. Plus, there's a part of me that just didn’t like seeing my little brother growing up so fast. I set up strict rules about when and where he could use devices at home. For instance, no phones during family dinners or school nights after 9 PM. He had to earn time on the computer by completing his chores and homework first. His allowance was tied directly into how well he adhered to these guidelines. Over the next year, I kept an eye out for any signs of misbehavior related to technology use. Thankfully, he did a great job staying within the boundaries we set together. He even surprised me by voluntarily limiting his screen time on weekends when he had friends over. By the time my brother turned thirteen and was able to start using his phone, I felt much more at ease with him handling this kind of responsibility. In hindsight, maybe I was a little overly protective. But looking back, I think my approach worked well for both of us. My brother appreciated having someone set boundaries rather than being given carte blanche access to everything tech-related. He now understands the importance of digital etiquette and staying safe online.
