When I Took My Sibling's Spot in Chess Club Without Asking

Anonymous Elusive Meddler #298 · General

So there I was, sitting at my desk after school, staring at my chessboard. I've been playing this game since I was a kid, and it always calms me down when things get hectic. But today, instead of the usual peace it brings, all I could think about was how unfair it is that Jake gets to join Chess Club without even trying out. He's barely been practicing lately and skips most sessions anyway. Now, normally I wouldn't complain; after all, he’s my little brother and deserves some downtime too. But the thought of us both missing out on spots because someone doesn’t pull their weight... it just bothers me more than usual these days. I’m not sure if it's because of this school project looming over me or just how much I love chess. Anyway, as fate would have it, today was sign-ups day for Chess Club and Jake somehow managed to get one of the spots even though he’s been slacking off. I wanted so badly to join them too. It seemed impossible until I saw him sitting in our house's living room, playing a video game instead of practicing. The temptation was too strong; I decided to sign up for his spot under his name without telling anyone about it. Sure, I could've just asked him nicely or confronted him directly, but part of me hoped he wouldn’t notice and everything would work out fine. It's been two days now since the sign-up sheet was due, and nothing has happened yet. But the guilt is eating at me more with each passing hour. Did I do the right thing by taking something that wasn't truly mine to take? What if Jake finds out? What will everyone think? I don’t know how much longer I can keep this up. Chess Club starts next week, and every time I picture myself sitting at those tables, surrounded by the board and pieces we all love, my heart aches for the opportunity. Maybe it’s time to come clean about what happened and try to figure out another way to join in the fun without stepping on anyone's toes. But the fear of being called out or losing this spot I've been craving... it makes me hesitate every step of the way.
