That Time I Felt So Ashamed at Work

So a couple of weeks ago, it was that busy rush hour on Friday night. You know the one, the moment after all the early shoppers have left, and you still have half an hour before closing time. That's when my coworker Jenny started talking about her weekend plans with this new guy she met at work. She went on and on about how cute he was and how they had plans for a movie night Saturday evening. Anyway, I just rolled my eyes and tuned her out because honestly, it gets old pretty fast. But then things got awkward when the manager walked by and heard us talking. He gave me this look that said, 'Keep it down, people are trying to work.' And that was the moment I thought, oh no, not again. I'm usually pretty good about keeping personal conversations to a minimum during busy hours because everyone knows we need to be focused on customer service first and foremost. But then this one lady walked up to me asking for help with some return policies, something she needed right away, and I just froze. All the words escaped my brain. That’s when Jenny stepped in, offering her assistance instead, like a knight in shining armor or something. It felt like I let down everyone by not being there to help someone who was clearly looking for me. And it wasn’t even close to closing time either, so there was no reason why anyone should have had to step in. But the real kicker? When the manager pulled me aside later and reminded us both about keeping work conversations on hold during peak hours, he pointed out that I let my coworker carry the weight when it came to customers. It's just been eating at me ever since because I know I could have handled things better. Sometimes I get so caught up in feeling like everyone else is always having all this fun and romance around me while I'm struggling with my own issues that I forget the little things, like being there for someone who needs help. It’s frustrating, but I think it also makes me more determined to do better next time. So here's to trying harder not just to look busy, but actually be useful when people need it most.
