I've Been Lying About My Job for Months

So here’s a thing about me. I’ve been telling people that I work at this really cool tech startup downtown, and it pays pretty well too. The truth is, though, I haven’t actually worked there in months. You see, my company had some financial troubles and they started laying off employees one by one. It wasn’t until the very last week that I got the boot myself. But here’s the kicker: even after losing my job, I couldn’t just come clean to everyone. Instead, I’ve been making up this story about being on a temporary leave because of health issues. To be honest, it felt safer and less awkward than admitting I was out of work. Now, I know what you’re thinking, I’m not some big fraudster or anything. It’s just that the whole unemployment thing feels like such a personal failure to me, especially since my friends are all moving forward in their careers with better positions and bigger salaries. That thought eats at me every time I tell another white lie about still being employed. But on days when I’m feeling particularly down, it doesn’t matter how much I remind myself that no job is perfect and there’s nothing wrong with taking a break to figure things out; all those lies just feel heavier. It’s been months now since I left my old job, and the longer this goes on, the more tangled up in these lies I become. Every time someone asks about how work is going, or if I’ve had any interviews lately, it feels like I’m trying to outrun a storm that keeps getting bigger. The funny thing is, right as I type this out, my old office called me with some freelance opportunities for short-term projects, a glimmer of hope at last? But even as the anxiety about unemployment starts to lift slightly, there’s still this overwhelming sense of guilt from all those lies I’ve been telling. And that’s where I am today. It’s a strange place to be, feeling like I’m pretending through each day without really knowing what’s next or how to fix it. Writing all this down isn’t going to change anything overnight, but maybe just admitting it out loud will make things feel a bit lighter.
