That Time I Made a Big Mistake at Work and Couldn't Say Sorry

So today was one of those days where everything felt off from the start. The barista shift before me was super busy, so I showed up 15 minutes early to prep everything, thinking it would be smooth sailing. But nope, as soon as my clock started ticking, a line snaked out past the door with all kinds of complicated orders. Espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, and some weird drink that I swear isn't even on our menu but everyone was clamoring for it like it was gospel. I got overwhelmed pretty fast, which is definitely not my usual MO. Usually, I pride myself on being super organized and attentive to detail. But today, as soon as the first customer handed me a $20 bill for their drink, I accidentally put that money in the tip jar instead of handing it back with the change. Before I could correct my mistake or apologize, she was already out the door. Next thing I know, the manager walks up to check on how things are going. She catches me at a bad moment; right as I'm about to make this other customer's special drink order, which had somehow gotten lost in the shuffle earlier because of my flustered state. The manager notices and asks if everything is okay, but all I could think was 'oh no, here comes the reprimand.' So naturally, I panicked and just made an excuse about it being a slow shift with too many different orders. She nodded sympathetically, like she understood (or maybe it was just me hoping that's what her face meant). But honestly, I'm not sure if my explanation even stuck with her because as soon as the next customer ordered their drink, something clicked in my brain and I realized how screwed up the whole day had been. Now here we are. My shift is over, and instead of walking out feeling accomplished or at least neutral, I feel like an impostor who can't even hand back change properly or remember a simple order without messing it all up. The worst part? There's no way to fix my screw-up now since the customer has left without her money. All in all, not my finest hour as a barista.
