I Sabotaged My Own Project at Work

So here’s the deal. I’m a software engineer working on a big project for my company’s next release. It’s been going well, but we’ve hit some roadblocks in recent weeks that have stressed everyone out. For context, I was recently passed over for a promotion and given an inferior role compared to where I thought I’d be at this point in my career. My coworkers are all super excited about this new project because they see it as the next big thing for us, but honestly, I’m not feeling very invested. Fast forward to last week, when we had a major setback due to some bugs that popped up unexpectedly. As part of our post-mortem, my boss asked me to take charge of an important module and make sure we could address the issues before the deadline next month. Instead of doing that, I made a critical error in the code on purpose, leaving myself as the only person who knows how to fix it. Why? Well, part of me wanted to slow things down because I felt like everyone was pushing too hard and the project wasn’t really aligned with my career goals anyway. The other part of me is just feeling bitter about being passed over for that promotion. So yeah, here’s where I stand: I intentionally messed up code I know only I can fix. When this gets out, there will be a lot of questions and I’ll likely face consequences. I’m not proud of it, but I felt like no one was listening to my concerns or considering the long-term impact on me personally. This isn’t who I am deep down, but right now I feel lost in what’s best for myself versus everyone else.
