I Got Carried Away With a Pet Project at Work

So, I'll admit it, I kinda got carried away with this side project at work. You know how there's always that one app or feature you really want to build but no one else seems interested in? Well, last month, I had an idea for a tiny productivity tool that could help everyone stay on top of their tasks more efficiently. I thought it would be cool and practical, so naturally, I spent most of my free time working on it without telling anyone, it was just going to be my little secret project. But here's the thing: as I got deeper into it, I realized it wasn't just a quick tool anymore. It became this intricate web of features that ended up taking more than a week’s worth of after-hours work. By the time my boss saw what I'd been doing, he was all like, 'Uh, didn't you have other stuff to do?' And yeah, turns out I had ignored some pretty important deadlines in favor of my pet project. So now here I am, feeling a bit sheepish and wondering how many secret projects are hiding under the noses of our managers. I guess sometimes it's better to just ask for permission before diving headfirst into an idea that sounds good but might be a little too ambitious.
