The Great Sock Heist at Work
Anonymous Suspicious Minx #917 · General
Hey everyone! I just had this major thing happen and I'm dying to know what you all think. So here's the backstory: I work at a big box store, and we have these massive racks of socks in the backroom. There are two types, brand-name fancy ones that cost an arm and a leg, and then generic store-brand socks. Now, there’s this guy named Jake who works with me on the floor. He always seems to be down on his luck, but he's never had any trouble finding money for those expensive brand-name socks. One day I'm putting away some of these fancy socks that someone returned when our boss isn't looking (weird policy against it, I know), and Jake walks in just as I’m about to put them back. He sees me with the box and his eyes light up like Christmas! Before I can say anything, he asks if he could have a pair of those for his sister’s birthday coming up. I didn’t want him thinking I was being stingy, so I said sure, plus it felt good to help someone out. The next day, our manager walks in with this huge frown and says we're missing an entire box of those fancy socks! Now he's going around asking who took them. When he questioned me, I told the truth, I gave a pair to Jake for his sister’s birthday, but he just looked at me like maybe I was lying or didn’t understand how serious it is that they’re gone. So here’s my question: Was I in the wrong? Would you have done what I did if you were in my shoes, trying to help out a coworker who seemed really down on his luck? Did he actually take them for his sister or am I being too paranoid about this? Let me know your thoughts!
