My Home Office Is A Lie

I’ve always wanted my home office to be this pristine space where I’m super productive and everything is neatly organized. You know, that Instagram-perfect corner with a view of nature outside the window and every paper perfectly clipped and color-coded on my desk. But the truth is, my home office is more like a war zone most days. My stack of books is leaning dangerously close to toppling over onto my laptop. The coffee cups hide under piles of papers that I swear I’ll go through someday. And yes, there’s usually an unmentionable sock or two hiding somewhere in the chaos. One day last week, I got a surprise visit from a client who was just passing by and thought it would be nice to drop in for a chat. As my door opened and she stepped into this hurricane of disarray, I quickly grabbed a stack of papers, pretended I was on an important call, and ushered her to the living room with promises of getting back to work soon. The whole time, all I could think about was how much that white lie bothered me afterward. It’s like my home office has become this symbol of my fears, fear of not being good enough, fear of failing at my freelance career. But here’s a confession: even though it felt terrible telling that little fib to cover up the mess, deep down I know there’s more than one way to be productive and successful. And someday maybe my office will reflect that.
