My Neighbors Think I'm a Professional Slacker

So I've been freelancing from home for about three years now. At first, everyone thought it was the dream gig, flexible hours, pajamas acceptable attire, and the occasional office visit can be replaced with a video call. But lately, I feel like they're starting to see me differently. It all started when my neighbor Lisa mentioned at a block party that she heard me talking on the phone, but then her dog started barking and everything went silent for about an hour. She asked if I was having a meeting with some clients or something important. 'Oh, yeah,' I said, 'just wrapping up a big project.' The real kicker happened yesterday when another neighbor, Mike, asked me how work was going at the grocery store. He seemed genuinely concerned and said he could hear me working on my computer late into the night. But you know what? That's right; it was 3 AM, but I wasn't doing any actual work, just catching up on Reddit and watching some funny cat videos. So here's where my confession comes in: I realized they probably think I’m just slacking off all day while they’re working their tails off. Part of me feels bad for letting them assume that, because they're likely struggling with a demanding job or small business. But the other part is frustrated because being productive doesn't always mean you have to be visible. I'm not sure how to change this perception, and it's eating at me. Should I set boundaries and stop working during daylight hours when neighbors are around? Or should I explain what a freelancer’s life entails and that it can look different from the 9-to-5 norm? It feels like a catch-22: wanting them to respect my privacy while also wanting recognition for my work. Anyway, here’s to hoping this gets off my chest and maybe someone out there has faced something similar. If you have any advice, I’m all ears. But honestly, this is more about venting than getting a solution, just trying to make sense of it all.
