My Big Oops at Work Today

So I work the night shift as a nurse at this hospital and today was just one of those days. You know when you wake up super tired, your brain feels like it's floating around in there, not really connected to anything? Yeah, that was me. But here's where it gets interesting: there's this patient, let’s call her Jane, who I’ve been looking after for a few weeks now. She’s in the hospital because of some medication issues and she's one of those patients who needs constant care and attention. Well, today something weird happened. I had just given Jane her usual evening medications, bottles lined up on the tray like an army, and was walking out to check on other patients when suddenly I realize...wait a minute...did I actually give her all those meds? Because my brain wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders, it didn’t click right away. It’s only later when checking in with Jane and she starts feeling really woozy that the alarm bells go off in my head. Panic mode! So here's where I get nervous because while I double-checked her chart (like I’m supposed to), it felt so different compared to how things normally are. Maybe I missed a step or something went haywire with the machine that labels and dispenses meds...who knows? Anyway, it’s one of those moments when you can’t help but wonder if maybe your brain just needs more sleep. It turns out Jane was actually fine; she had some side effects from other causes unrelated to my mistake, thank goodness! But still, I felt like a total rookie and now I have this nagging feeling every time I approach her tray...did I mess up again? Anyway, so that's my big confession for the day. I hope this doesn’t make me look too incompetent because believe me, it’s not usually like this! Just one of those moments when your head isn't quite as clear as you'd want it to be at work.
