I Got Caught Daydreaming Again

Today was one of those days where I just couldn't focus. You know the kind, your brain is so overwhelmed with everything else that you forget what's right in front of you. It's been like this for a while now, but today felt particularly bad. I've got this patient, let's call them Sarah. She's going through some tough times, and I feel pretty connected to her situation. I don't know if it's because she reminds me of someone from my past or just that we share similar life challenges. Either way, whenever I see her name on the schedule, it makes me a little melancholy. Today was no different. I walked into her room with a stack of papers and started making small talk as usual. But before long, my thoughts drifted back to all those things I've been stressing about. The bills piling up, the argument with my sister last week that I still haven't made right, and then there's just life in general, feeling like I'm always scrambling just to keep my head above water. I started reading from one of the papers, but as soon as I did, it was clear something wasn't right. The words on the page were swimming around before me. Sarah looked at me with a worried expression, and I knew immediately what had happened. She must have noticed how spaced out I'd been. We both sat there in silence for a moment, just looking at each other. And then she said, “You okay today?” How do you respond to something like that? It's one thing when someone asks if you're having an off day, but it's another entirely when they seem genuinely concerned about your well-being as more than just their nurse. I gave her a forced smile and said I was fine. But we both knew the truth; there’s only so much time to hide behind professional masks before they start to crack. The rest of the day went okay, but I could tell I lost some of Sarah's trust. Maybe it was misplaced, maybe not, either way, now when she looks at me, there's a doubt there that wasn't before. And that's hard for both of us.
