When My Childhood Toy Came Back to Haunt Me
Anonymous Sheepish Snitch #786 · General
So I know it's been decades since my childhood toy collection was in rotation, but last week when I finally got around to cleaning out the attic, one of them came back into my life. It's this little plush teddy bear named Mr. Fluffums that I had as a kid, he's got these oversized floppy ears and a soft brown fur coat that's almost silky. Back then, every night before bed, I'd have to whisper sweet nothings to him, asking him for good dreams and telling him about my day. The only problem is, now in my 50s, cuddling Mr. Fluffums at night seems... odd. Yet here I am, sneaking into the attic just last Tuesday to take a peek at this old stuffed animal again, couldn't resist after seeing how he looked so lonely on his shelf. Fast forward to bedtime, and instead of my comfy adult pillow, there was Mr. Fluffums squeezed in between my arms as if nothing has changed since childhood. I whispered my usual nightly conversation with him about mundane adult stuff like work woes or trying out a new recipe that night, but what felt worse is the next morning when my husband woke up and saw me cuddling this stuffed toy. He looked at me with a mix of amusement and maybe just a little pity, asking if I had missed those childhood nights. And as much as I'd like to pretend I haven't gone back in time, that plushy bear felt incredibly comforting even now, the kind of comfort only a long-lost teddy can give you. So yeah, here's my confession: in my 50s, I still have an occasional sneaky night with Mr. Fluffums, and sometimes I wonder if it’s okay to hold onto childhood comforts as an adult.
