Caught in the Lie

I never thought I would get caught lying to my teenage kids about their chores. We had a deal that if they did them without being asked for two weeks straight, they could have a weekend off from all household duties. It was going so well until last week when I got behind on a project at work and completely forgot about the kitchen trash can one night. The next day, with a foul smell lingering in the air, I panicked and threw away their chore list instead of telling them what really happened. Of course, they eventually found out during an innocent search for more chores to do. They laughed so hard that I joined in, but now I feel embarrassed about being such a poor liar.
