I Pranked My Lab Partner Over Zoom Meetings
Anonymous Cunning Snitch #886 · General
So here's the thing, my lab partner, Max, has been bugging me nonstop for weeks to come up with a way for us to stay on track during our research project. As we're both grad students juggling multiple responsibilities, it’s tough to keep things rolling smoothly when we’re not in the same room. Max is this really nice guy but also incredibly literal and rule-oriented. He was starting to get on my nerves with his constant emails about meeting times and his incessant need for organization and adherence to our set agenda. One day, I had a flash of inspiration, what if I could make him laugh or maybe even groan over something outlandish? I decided to prank him during one of our scheduled Zoom meetings. For context, he’s always complained about me being too relaxed and unfocused when we're together virtually. So, the plan was simple: dress up in a ridiculous costume (think full-body chicken suit with oversized beak) and pretend it’s a mandatory part of our meeting attire. The day arrived, and I nervously joined the call with my ridiculous getup, anticipating his reaction. It was hilarious, I could tell by the awkward pauses that he was processing what was happening. Then came the laughter, though at first it sounded like shock before turning to hearty laughs mixed with disbelief. Of course, as expected in a Zoom setting without proper body language cues, Max took longer than usual to react and initially looked concerned and confused. But then he saw my eyes giggling behind the beak and started laughing too, breaking into his own version of my chicken suit at home for our next meeting, complete with a homemade cardboard mask. In retrospect, it was just a momentary stress relief tactic but ended up bonding us over something silly instead of stressing out about missed deadlines or unmet goals. We laughed so hard that we agreed to let the rule-breaking continue and made jokes throughout our project, definitely helped take the edge off what could have been another stressful semester.
