Boredom Breeds Curiosity in the Office

This past week has been a bit of a drag at work. Everything feels routine and predictable to the point where I find myself just staring out the window, hoping for something exciting to happen. Today, however, things took an unexpected turn when my curiosity got the better of me during lunch break. The new guy in accounting, Alex, was talking about his pet parrot over lunch one day, describing how smart it is and all the neat tricks he’s taught it. I’ve never been much for animals but something about this conversation struck a chord with me, perhaps out of sheer boredom and wanting to feel some connection at work. So, when I saw Alex working alone in his office just before closing time today, I couldn’t help myself, I snuck over there, opened the door quietly, and pretended to be looking for my stapler while trying to listen through the window if he had a parrot with him. Of course, it was pretty foolish since nothing about his setup suggested he’d bring an animal in, but still... The guilt of almost getting caught is eating at me now as I replay that moment over and over again.
