I lied about my lunch break to avoid coworkers.

Today at work was particularly hectic. I’m a nurse in the cardiology unit, and we were short-staffed with only two nurses on duty for a full floor of patients. It’s not uncommon for things to get chaotic, but today felt like an extra rough day compared to others. One patient had taken a sudden turn for the worse, requiring constant attention from myself and my coworker, who seemed stressed and frazzled. The rest of our patients were equally in need of assistance, with some needing medication administration while others needed wound care or blood tests. As you can imagine, it was a lot to handle. As the morning wore on, I found myself skipping my usual lunch break because there just wasn’t time without risking patient care. My coworker had been taking shorter breaks herself and seemed to be keeping an eye on me too, which added extra pressure to stick around and help out. The thought of leaving for a full hour during this chaos made me anxious. To make matters worse, the lunch room was filled with staff who I usually chat with over food, nurses from other units who enjoy the break as much as anyone else. When they noticed my absence at our usual meeting point and asked about it later in the day, I found myself lying to avoid further questions. 'I ate earlier,' I told them bluntly, avoiding eye contact. 'Had a lot going on this morning.' It felt petty even saying it out loud to myself after, but lying seemed easier than explaining how stressed I was and that I just couldn’t face the break room with everyone else today. And who knows? Maybe next week will be better for lunch breaks. But here’s what I’m really feeling: a small bit of guilt over not being fully honest. Sometimes it can feel like such a relief to lie, but it's never quite as satisfying as telling the truth and moving forward.
