I Spent My Lab Money on Books About Birds

So here’s the deal, I’m a grad student in molecular biology. I love my research and all, but honestly? I have this weird obsession with birds. It started when I was a kid, seeing robins hop around our backyard, and it just never really went away. Recently, I got a small grant for some experiments I wanted to do. Great! The thing is, I’ve been putting off actually doing the work because...well, because I ended up buying books about different bird species instead. Yes, you heard me right, I used my research money for ornithology books and field guides. I know it’s not like I’m squandering funds or anything, these are just books. But still! I keep telling myself that once the bird books arrive, I’ll get back to the lab stuff. It’s just hard because learning about birds, especially rare species in our region, is so fascinating. Now here I am, looking at my budget and thinking, ‘Wow, maybe I’m the asshole for treating this as a hobby fund rather than research expenses.’ Am I being completely unreasonable? Should I return some of these books or just power through with my research like it’s supposed to be done? What would you do if you were me?
