I Got Paranoid and Broke Up with My Long-Distance BF Before Moving to a New City

So here’s the thing. I just moved from Boston to Denver for a new job, super exciting! But I’ve been long-distance with Tom since college. We were so happy together, but this move was sudden. Like, my boss called me out of the blue and offered it, there wasn’t time to even talk to Tom about it first. I got here and everything is different. The city’s huge, I’m working with people who have totally different senses of humor. And somehow, every time I call Tom at home, he sounds tired or distracted. I know I shouldn’t read too much into it, but I can’t help feeling like something’s off. Then last night, we had a fight on the phone. I said something about how lonely Denver feels and next thing you know, Tom is talking about me not being there for him lately. He wasn’t mean or anything, just saying that he misses having us as a real couple more than long-distance friends. It hit me then, this feeling of wanting to run away from it all. I said “I don’t think we should keep doing this.” Then before I could think, “I think maybe we need to break up.” He was stunned but agreed after some tears and goodbyes. But now, the next morning, I can’t stop wondering if I made a huge mistake. Did Tom just get worn down by my constant complaining about everything being so new? And did breaking us up so suddenly solve anything or make it worse? I hate feeling like this but honestly, maybe ending things and starting fresh in Denver was the right choice. Maybe. But what if it wasn’t? What am I supposed to do now?
