The Cookie Thief Confession

Anonymous Coy Trickster #156 · General

So here's the thing, I know I'm not really an asshole for what I did, but lately I've been feeling a bit guilty about it. My sister, who lives in another state with her family, came to visit last month during Thanksgiving. We're close and have always shared everything growing up, so you can imagine my surprise when I noticed a half-empty cookie jar while she was staying over. I love those cookies; they’re from my favorite bakery downtown that’s been around since before I was born. The only person who knows about this is me, I even bought them in bulk and kept them hidden under the kitchen sink because, let's be honest, it's not like I have much else to hide there. Anyway, after realizing some of the cookies were missing, I confronted her. She gave me a story about needing the energy for all the holiday festivities and promised she'd pay back double the cost. But something in my gut told me she was lying. Her eyes avoided mine when she said it, which doesn't happen often between us. I didn't want to be the one who ruined our trip with this, so I kept quiet about it but made a mental note to keep an eye on future supplies. It wasn’t until after she left that I went through her luggage and found a half-used bag of those cookies stashed in her suitcase. Now here’s where things get complicated: I didn't tell her then. Instead, I bought more cookies and slipped them back into the kitchen when no one was looking. But ever since, every time she comes over or sends me an email about visiting again soon, this nagging voice tells me that maybe I should have been honest with her. I feel like I did something petty by searching through her belongings and keeping quiet, but at the same time, I justified it as protecting my little secret stash. Was I wrong to do this? Am I really going down in life’s books as The Cookie Thief Brother?
