My Roommate Thinks I'm Messy But It's Actually Her Closet That Needs Sorting Out

So here's the deal. My roommate and I have been living together for a little over two months now, and she seems to think that my room is a total disaster area. She's constantly giving me looks like 'Why can't you clean up your stuff?' every time she walks past or enters my room. Now, I do agree that I could probably be better about putting things away more often, but let's talk about her side of the room for a minute here. To set the scene: we have this massive closet in our dorm room. It's big enough to fit both of us inside and get dressed fully, which is pretty cool. But my roommate has taken it upon herself to make it her personal fortress of junk. From unopened boxes of clothes that she hasn't touched since move-in day to crumpled up papers scattered across the floor, you'd think we're living in a post-apocalyptic world rather than a college dorm room. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly the epitome of organization either. I do have my moments where everything is neatly tucked away and tidy, but that tends to last only until the next assignment or project hits me like a ton of bricks and starts piling up papers all over again. But her side? It’s basically untouched except for when she needs something specific. The kicker happened last week. We were having an epic movie night with our mutual friend Jake, complete with popcorn, pizza, and way too many snacks. In the heat of snack consumption, I needed a place to stash some of my half-eaten food while we watched, so what better than inside the closet? Big mistake. She came home right as I was putting away the last bag of chips, only to find them nestled in between her piles of forgotten stuff. Her reaction was less 'Oh no, how did that get there?' and more 'How could you possibly be this messy?!' It's funny, because if she had taken a second look at what exactly I'd put the snack bag among, she would have noticed it wasn't my doing but her own mess. I've tried pointing out to her that perhaps we should both do better about cleaning up our individual spaces, and not just expect me to handle it. But she just brushes me off or gives me these half-hearted 'oh yeah you're right' type nods without actually changing anything. So here I am, feeling like a bit of an asshole for supposedly being messy, when really her side is the real issue. Maybe next time I'll snap some pictures and show them to her, hoping it sticks this time around that we both need to clean up our act. Until then, expect more movie nights in the hallway.
