My Grad School Peer Pressure Mishap

So last semester, my thesis group decided we needed to do an overnight study session for our final exams. The plan was that we'd all gather at the campus library and go through each other's notes and make sure everyone was prepared for these notoriously tricky tests. Thing is, I don't really stay out late like that much anymore. My body clock has a thing against staying up past 10 PM most nights. But my classmates were so enthusiastic about it! They said it would be fun, and we'd bond as a group over some late-night caffeine and junk food. I tried to express this politely, saying I was concerned about the impact of such little sleep on performance. They just laughed it off and said everything would be fine if we did it together. So I caved in because I didn't want them to think I wasn't team player or something. The night came around, and everyone was super excited, ordering pizzas, chatting loudly about the best strategies for acing our tests. Meanwhile, my eyelids were getting heavier by the minute. When they suggested playing some video games after studying for a while, I felt like an old fogey trying to keep up with them. Then there was this moment where one of them challenged me to stay awake until 3 AM. Everyone got caught up in the hype and started teasing me about needing my pajamas and stuffed animals to feel safe going to sleep in unfamiliar places. I'm not proud to admit it, but I did end up staying up way past my bedtime that night. I drank more coffee than ever before just to keep my eyes open! The next morning was brutal, everyone looked like walking zombies, and so did I. My notes from that session are barely readable because my hand was shaking from lack of sleep. So yes, the irony is not lost on me, sacrificing a good night's rest for some kind of misplaced team spirit ended up being counterproductive in achieving our actual academic goals. In retrospect, I wish I had just stuck to my guns and gotten those few hours of sleep instead.
