I Gave My New Neighbors a Run for Their Money in Welcome-ness

So I just moved into this new apartment complex on the outskirts of town. It's got a nice pool, which is why my girlfriend convinced me to move here even though it's slightly out of our comfort zone. Anyway, last night, the place was eerily quiet and everyone seemed busy with their own lives. So when two people showed up carrying boxes and bags, I knew they were new neighbors. I thought it would be a nice idea to greet them properly, you know, hand out some welcome baskets or something. But instead of just dropping off a basket and running back inside, I decided to meet the couple at their doorstep with balloons, streamers, and an array of home-cooked goodies that I made earlier in the day. They were clearly caught off guard by my enthusiasm, but they smiled politely as I explained everything. I think what got me was when they said they just needed some time to settle in before they could properly thank me for my efforts. So naturally, I told them not to worry about it, that settling in is hard work and I'm here to help. I offered to show them around the complex, introduce them to people, anything to make sure they felt comfortable. After a while of talking, the wife started looking really uncomfortable like she was trying to get her husband's attention. That’s when it dawned on me: maybe this wasn't exactly what they wanted or expected from a neighbor. But hey, I figured someone had to show them how warm and fuzzy we are in our little community. They took the plates and cups I offered and said thanks as they hurried back inside their apartment. Yeah, maybe I went overboard with my welcoming efforts, but isn’t it better to try too hard than not enough? Who knows, one of these days they might come out to say a real hello, right?
