Started Painting But...

So I started painting recently... Yeah, it's been my dream for years to finally pick up a brush and see what happens. I thought it would be the perfect way to unwind after work, you know? A nice hobby to help me escape from everything... At first, it was great. All that bright color on stark white canvases made me so happy.... But here's the thing. Every time I think I've got something good going, it just doesn't look right when I step back and see the whole picture... The details don't work together; the colors clash... It's like my brain is doing one thing but my hands are following a completely different path... And every time I try to fix it, it seems worse. My teacher has been really nice though... She just smiles at me as if she knows something I don't... What am I missing here? Is there some secret or trick that makes all this work out? Am I even cut out for painting after all these years of dreaming about it... I feel so lost and frustrated, but also so excited because maybe figuring this out is part of the journey... Anyone have tips or stories to share from their own artistic struggles...?
