i did something i am not proud of

so last year my wife passed away and it was really tough for me. we had been together for 40 years and everyone thought we were soulmates or something. anyway, one day i went to visit her mom at the nursing home. this lady across the hall always talks about her granddaughter and how she is dating some guy who is 'all wrong' for her. she goes on and on about it, you know? well one day i just lost my patience. i was still so upset from losing my wife that hearing someone go on about their family problems really got to me. so while this lady was talking, i casually dropped a little rumor about the granddaughter's boyfriend being not-so-great in bed. it wasn't true at all but it shut her up and she left me alone for weeks after that. i felt terrible afterwards because i know how painful it is when someone says things like that. but it worked, you know? now people think twice before bothering me with their nonsense. i don't really need anyone to tell me if i'm the asshole here or not - i know what i did wasn't right and was just trying to cope with my loss in a way that was selfish of me. i wanted it off my chest though.
