I Snitched On My Teenagers To Their Friends' Parents

So, you know when your kids invite their friends over for the night and say they'll be on their best behavior? Yeah, well, I don't believe any of that. Last weekend, Alex invited five buddies home. I thought maybe they'd all study... yeah right. Instead, they were playing video games until midnight with the TV blaring and laughing like lunatics every time someone got a high score. I tried talking to them politely about keeping it down but no dice. The worst was when Sarah came over, she's this quiet girl Alex has a crush on, and even she joined in on the loudness, giggling way more than usual. It was obvious they were up to something silly and it made me feel like an old fogey who couldn’t join in their fun but I’m supposed to be responsible here. So you know what? I did the unthinkable, I told Sarah’s parents that we had a strict house rule about loud parties and if Alex's friends didn't keep it down, they’d have to leave. They were actually understanding... probably because their kid was being equally ridiculous at her place. Anyway, after midnight, things got even noisier and I figured the time for pleading politeness was over. I called Sarah’s parents again to remind them of our house rules. It ended up calming everyone down... and made me feel better too. I didn’t exactly stick to my principles about not interfering but honestly? I don't regret it. So here's the thing: maybe I'm a bit overprotective. Maybe I have trust issues from when they were little and used to come home with grass stains in their hair. But you know what else is true? It’s 3 AM on a school night and my kid’s friends should be sleeping, not laughing like lunatics watching silly cartoons. If that makes me the bad guy or too strict, so be it... but I’ll do this again if I have to.
