A Mistake with the Orders

Today was a rough day at work, man. I'm a barista at this tiny coffee shop that's always packed, but today it was extra busy. People were ordering complicated drinks and rushing us for their coffee. One customer in particular really got under my skin, let's call her Janice, even though that wasn't her name. She wanted something with almond milk, which I always screw up because they're all stored together in the fridge and look similar to each other. But she was in a hurry, so when she came back to pick it up, instead of apologizing like any human being would do, she just gave me that judgmental look. So I decided to take matters into my own hands. Instead of admitting I made a mistake, I switched out her drink for someone else's and hoped no one noticed. But the other person was already gone by then, so it was like Janice had never left. This is where things get complicated, because now everyone behind her in line started getting agitated about their drinks being delayed. I tried to fix it quickly by rushing through the rest of the orders and explaining I'd mixed them up earlier, but you know how that goes: once you make one mistake, everything seems to fall apart. In the end, we had to give out free refills for everyone in line, which is like a slap in the face since our profit margins are already razor thin. Why did I do it? Was I just tired of people being so impatient all the time? Or was it because I wanted to prove I wasn't wrong about her rushed order? Now looking back, it's clear that switching out drinks was only going to make things worse. But at the moment, my ego got in the way and I thought it would save me from admitting fault. Guess I learned a hard lesson: honesty is always better than trying to cover up mistakes. And maybe next time I'll just take Janice's drink back to the kitchen and get her the right one instead of causing chaos.
