New Kid in Town Confesses Her First Big Mistake

I moved here about two months ago and I was so excited to start fresh. New city, new friends, the whole package! But there's one thing that happened when I first got here that still makes me cringe. So, if anyone can relate or has advice on how to move past it, that'd be great, but honestly, this is mostly just for me to get off my chest. I was at a big gathering at the community center as part of my school's orientation. The place was packed with students and everyone seemed so friendly, which made me nervous but hopeful. I didn't know anyone yet, and since I'm kind of shy, I was looking for someone to talk to and felt like maybe striking up a conversation would help me make friends. I noticed a girl my age who had been laughing with her friend group the whole time, and she seemed friendly enough. So, I mustered up the courage and went over to introduce myself. Her name is Sarah. We started chatting about movies we liked, which was an easy icebreaker for me since I'm obsessed with film. I mentioned a popular movie from last year that had some fun memes attached to it. Everyone seemed engaged in the conversation, but then I suddenly remembered that Sarah's friend next to her was staring at us and rolled her eyes before whispering something to Sarah. Oh no! A moment later, Sarah politely excused herself to go talk about something else with her friends. I felt awful for maybe making her feel uncomfortable by bringing up such a silly topic. And I haven't seen Sarah since that day, my assumption was that she probably just needed to check in on her friend who seemed upset. But honestly, it's like there’s this elephant in the room whenever we do meet later and talk about more serious stuff. Anyway, this whole incident has made me a bit gun-shy about striking up conversations with anyone new without doing more research beforehand. I hope this doesn't define how people see me here! Am I overthinking it? Have any of you ever had a similar situation where you wished you could go back in time and fix something?
