I Tried to be Cool but Messed Up Badly in Class

So, here's a story from my college days. I'm studying at this big university where everyone seems to know exactly what they're doing and how to do it. You know, the kind of place where you walk into class and think, 'I hope no one notices me being clueless.' Yeah, that's me. Anyway, there was this really cool lecture on modern art techniques that I thought would be a great opportunity for me to show everyone how much I cared about being hip and in the know. So, naturally, as we were discussing one of my favorite contemporary artists, I raised my hand enthusiastically and declared confidently, 'I love his work! It's so edgy.' Now here's where things got a bit awkward. You see, I didn't realize that by saying something sounded like it was coming from the 90s, everyone knows edgy is so last millennium. Plus, there were actually people in class who knew this artist pretty well and they kind of looked at me like 'Really?' The professor smiled politely but then moved on to a different topic, leaving my little 'edgy' declaration hanging out there like a fishhook without bait. I sat back down feeling pretty embarrassed, trying not to make eye contact with anyone. After class, as people were chatting about the lecture and sharing notes, I could feel myself shrinking in my chair. I decided it was best to just keep quiet for a while until everyone had forgotten about my little mishap. But of course, college is full of drama, and someone must have thought it funny enough to share on social media later. Oh well, at least I learned that when I want to be cool in class, maybe I should stick with talking about more timeless things or actually knowing what 'edgy' means these days. Still, it's a reminder not to overthink and just be myself from now on.
