Color Choices

I recently started painting my room in shades of purple and grey. I've always been drawn to these colors because they represent mystery and calmness to me. However, every time I walk into a room with such tones, people immediately comment on how gloomy it looks or question why I chose them. Am I the only one who finds solace in darker color schemes? Is there something wrong with my taste in decor? What would you do if your personal style clashed so heavily with others' perceptions?
