Why I'm Telling on My Teenager to Get Them in Trouble

I know it's not cool to be the parent who tattles, but here goes. So yesterday my teenager came home late from a party at their friend’s house (you know which one), and they were acting all mysterious about where they'd been or what happened. I asked them questions like ‘How was the party? Did you have fun?’ They just gave me this look that said, “Mom, do we really need to go through this?” Ugh, I hated it but also felt so relieved when I found out later from my neighbor's son that they had sneaked into his basement for a few hours to play video games and watch movies with a bunch of other kids. Talk about an eye-roller moment! They told me all the drama about some girl who was crying because she thought someone liked her but actually, it turned out he was only friends with her best friend. Total teen soap opera stuff. Now here’s where I got into trouble: instead of telling them what they did wasn’t right and that they need to be more responsible next time, I called up the neighbor to thank him for watching over my kid and making sure nothing dangerous happened, but in the process I may have mentioned some choice words about teenagers today. Oops! The worst part? My kid heard me talking with the neighbor from their room because our house is that close. So now they think I’m going behind their back, which is not how I wanted this to go down at all. Confession time: Even though it wasn’t my intention to get them in trouble or break trust, I know what I did was still pretty bad. Here’s hoping a little extra honesty and an apology can smooth things over with them.
