Shifted Out Of My Lane During A Rush Hour Call

I work night shifts at a customer service center. The calls can be relentless, especially around rush hour when everyone's getting off from their day jobs and calling in to solve some late-afternoon crisis. There was this one time I had an emergency call that came right as my lunch break ended, literally the exact second my shift resumed. So naturally, I'm rushing through it while still trying to sort out my schedule for the rest of the night. I mean, I had just made a giant sandwich beforehand, and here's this guy calling about his internet being down when he's supposed to do some video meeting in five minutes. Great timing, right? Anyway, during one particularly lengthy hold, I glanced up from my computer screen long enough to notice I hadn't moved out of the lunch room yet. So naturally, being late for work because you're still eating your lunch is a new one for me. Of course, by the time I was in position to actually start doing something useful and not just stuffing my face with turkey and cheese, it was as if everyone had figured out how to call at exactly the same moment, probably due to their own little timing issues. My manager ended up pulling me aside after my shift for a 'talk,' which mostly consisted of them trying to act concerned while I internally debated whether or not that sandwich was worth my job. Oh, and turns out there's this unwritten rule about actually being in your workspace during business hours. Who knew? But seriously, is it really so unreasonable to want to finish a delicious sandwich before the clock hits '12 PM' and everyone starts hitting their phones? I'm still not sure if I should have just stayed put and finished eating or tried to navigate through the office while half-swallowing bites of bread. The moral of this story? Maybe leave a little extra time for my breaks from now on. Or maybe just find another job where lunch isn't an interruption.
