When I Forgot My Kid's Birthday Twice in One Year

So here's the deal. I've got two kids, a six-year-old named Lily and an eight-year-old named Jake. We have this big family tradition where everyone makes a huge fuss over birthdays, cake, presents, you name it. Last year was no exception, but I messed up pretty royally on both of their birthdays. And by 'messing up,' I mean I forgot them completely. I remember the weeks leading up to Lily's birthday, I had all these grand ideas for her party and even started buying decorations in advance. But somehow, as I was driving around town, doing errands one morning, my phone buzzed with reminders about a work meeting I needed to attend that day. The more I thought about it, the harder it became to switch gears back to Lily's birthday. By the time the sun set, her special day had passed without so much as a 'Happy Birthday' from me. I tried to make up for it by getting her an extra present and having cake the next evening, but I could see in her eyes that it wasn't quite the same. Jake's birthday rolled around shortly after, and you'd think I would have remembered this time. But nope, caught up once again with work demands and a few other things on my plate. I ended up surprising him with a belated celebration days later, but he was visibly disappointed that his big day hadn't been recognized in the moment. It's not like I don't love them or mean to forget; it's just so easy these days to lose track of time and get wrapped up in all my adult responsibilities. But every night when we tuck them into bed, they tell me about their favorite parts of the day, and this year, those stories are noticeably lacking the usual excitement around birthdays. So here I am, wondering if anyone else out there has a similar experience? Am I being too hard on myself, or is it really okay to lose track like this when your kids deserve so much more from you? Let me know what you think, I'm really feeling stuck between trying my best and falling short.
