A Cashier's Confession....

Anonymous Shifty Schemer #657 · General

So today at work, there was this one customer who was just super impatient. You know the type, they have a cart full of stuff and are already standing by checkout 5, but all the other lanes are open... It’s like they think the line is going to speed up if they get angry enough or something. Well, anyway, so I’m ringing them up at my lane, which let’s be honest, isn’t exactly lightning fast even with just a few items. And this customer is tapping their foot and muttering about how it’s taking forever... It's like they think I can speed through the scanner by sheer force of will or something. So then, as if to make them wait longer (which I didn't do on purpose, promise!), there’s this moment when a coworker needs help in another lane. And what does my customer do? They start counting their change loudly and looking at their watch every few seconds.... But here's the real confession part, while they were counting change... I might have been doing something I shouldn't. I was adding up all the prices of items in other people’s carts, just for fun... trying to guess what the total would be before it showed on the register. Yeah, yeah, I know. A cashier guessing totals instead of ringing stuff up quickly... really mature of me.... And you know how they say you shouldn't count your chickens before they hatch? Well, maybe this customer should have thought about that before getting so worked up over a few minutes' wait. Or maybe I should just stick to counting numbers and leave the stress management tips for someone else...
