I Spilled Coffee on My Boss's Laptop... And Lied About It

So here's the deal. I work at this quaint little coffee shop in a busy corner of the city. Yesterday was particularly hectic with lines snaking out to the street. By mid-afternoon, my hands were shaking, and my brain wasn't as sharp as it usually is. That’s when I made my biggest blunder yet. It all started innocently enough. My boss, who I’ll call Alex, came in around 3 PM looking frazzled and holding his laptop tightly to avoid drops from the crowd. He sat at our busiest table near the window so he could see everything happening outside while he worked. As usual, people were getting impatient because of delays with orders. I was preparing a large order when suddenly there was an awkward silence followed by a loud sputter and a hiss. My eyes widened in horror as I realized I had accidentally spilled hot coffee all over Alex’s laptop. He jumped up from the table, laptop still clutched, looking bewildered. "Oh my God, Alex, are you okay? Is your computer ruined?" I asked, my voice quivering with fear. He seemed to snap out of it and looked down at his laptop, then back at me. "I think we’re going to have a problem here," he said grimly. The truth is, I was terrified of the consequences. I knew if word got out that I had caused such significant damage to company property, my job might be in jeopardy. So as Alex called tech support and explained what happened with trembling hands, I did something incredibly stupid, I lied to him about the spill. I said a customer knocked over their drink, knowing it would look like someone else's fault rather than mine. The guilt has been eating away at me ever since. Every time I see Alex, who’s normally so calm and supportive, looking stressed out or distracted, my stomach sinks with shame. I know deep down that lying to protect myself wasn’t the right thing to do, but I’m still struggling with whether confessing now would make things worse. I guess this is more of a confession for myself rather than anyone else reading it. It’s just another step in my journey of trying not to let mistakes define me and learning how to take responsibility for them. But as they say, actions speak louder than words, and I’m still waiting to see if mine will catch up.
