...Why Did I Do That...?

So there's this thing my family's been doing for years now... Every Sunday we have dinner together and catch up on everyone's week. It's a tradition, and usually it goes smoothly... But last Sunday, something weird happened.... My eldest daughter, let's call her Emma, came in late that day wearing a shirt I'd never seen before, something bright pink with cartoon characters. She looked at me sheepishly when she noticed my eyebrows raising. Normally I wouldn't care about what she wears to our dinner... but for some reason it set me off.... I started questioning her taste choices, telling her that maybe she should think more about the impression she makes on others. And then, oh boy, I said something really out of line: I told her she looked like a teenager instead of an adult woman. The room went silent... and Emma's face turned white.... I didn't mean to be so harsh, but the words just came out before I could stop them. After that, we finished our meal in awkward silence... It was definitely not my proudest moment as a parent... Why did I do this? Was it because I'm worried about her growing up too fast? Am I projecting my own anxieties onto her choices? Or is it just me being an overbearing mother? I want to apologize, but I don't know how. Part of me wants to tell her that I was wrong and that she should wear whatever makes her happy... And yet another part worries if by doing so I'm setting a bad precedent. So now here I am, sitting at my desk typing this out like it's some kind of therapy session for myself. It just feels good to admit I messed up in front of no one but myself....
