I Spilled My Heart Out to My Teen's Crush Without Realizing It Was Them

So last week, my daughter had a big test coming up and asked if she could study at her friend Emma’s house. She gave me Emma’s address and I dropped her off, promising to pick her up later. While picking her up, we ran into Emma’s mom in the hallway who was heading out too. We chatted for a bit about school and how busy everything has been recently. In my excitement about sharing how great my daughter is doing in class, I started telling Mrs. Johnson all about her progress and some of her quirks, like how she loves math but struggles with history, and how she’s really growing into herself after some tough middle school years. As I was leaving, something made me say, “And you know, my daughter has a big crush on this one boy in class, John. She thinks he’s great at sports and super nice to everyone.” Then it hit me, Emma told her mom that she and John were just hanging out as friends. I didn’t realize Emma was the friend my daughter had been talking about! I froze, mortified. Was Mrs. Johnson looking at me like ‘Really? You know my child has a crush on yours and you’re telling us this?’ But it’s not like I set out to embarrass anyone; it just sort of came out in casual conversation. When I got home, I was too nervous to talk about it with my daughter right away. She finally noticed something was up and asked me if there was anything wrong. I told her what happened and apologized for spilling the beans without knowing it wasn’t as innocent as we thought. To my surprise, she laughed it off and said it’s not a big deal. But honestly, I can’t stop thinking about how awkward this must feel for both of them now. Did Emma ever tell John her feelings? Do they think about our conversation when they see each other at school? I know it sounds silly to worry so much over something that happened in passing and was meant well, but here we are. I just wish there was a way to go back in time and take those words back.
