I Spilled Milk On The New Desk And Lied About It

So you know how everyone in our school was super excited about getting brand new desks last week? Yeah, well, I kind of had a little accident with mine on Monday. I was having breakfast before class started and my hand slipped while pouring milk into my cereal, and it all went flying right onto the shiny surface of my desk. It looked like there were actual clouds forming inside the wood! Of course, everyone turned around to look at me and laugh because they thought it was funny that I spilled my milk so badly. But here's where things get interesting. You see, while I'm not exactly a clumsy kid, I do have my moments, I really didn't want anyone thinking I was a klutz or getting in trouble for damaging the new desk right out of the gate. So instead of admitting what had happened and offering to clean it up myself, which would've been the honest thing to do, I told Mr. Thompson that someone must’ve left water on there overnight from their lunchbox. I was so sure he wouldn't believe me since it was fresh milk but... surprise! He believed me completely because apparently no one saw what happened and thought leaving a cup of water there made sense for some reason? Maybe they were thinking the same thing I did, which is that if I had actually been clumsy enough to spill my milk in front of everyone, someone would have noticed. Anyway, after class, when we all went out into the hallway to get our lockers, I could tell by looking around at how messy the desks are getting that no one else has spilled anything. So now it's just my little secret until Mr. Thompson figures it out on his own someday, or better yet, never does if things stay clean. But honestly? The guilt is starting to weigh on me more than any punishment ever would have, and I'm still not sure why milk made those clouds appear so clearly like they did. Maybe we should just start leaving bowls of water on our desks every day as part of a new tradition or something?
