Coffee Stains Are Not Just an Art Form to Me Anymore

So I'm a barista at this trendy little café near my house. We have these big glass windows facing the street, and one day, everything was going fine until around lunchtime when this guy comes in, orders his coffee, takes a sip or two and then walks out with what looks like a huge, wet stain on the back of his shirt. He must have left immediately because I never saw him again. But as I was cleaning up that morning’s mess (which is not unusual), I noticed something: there was barely any water damage at all inside the cup he had been drinking from. Now, this happened during a rush when we were quite busy and also right after lunchtime service began, meaning we weren’t exactly in the midst of a lull. It made me suspicious because if it were just an accident of him spilling his coffee on himself, there would have likely been more evidence inside the cup. So I started to wonder, was he really that clumsy and didn't notice? Or did something else happen? The next day, as things slowed down a bit around mid-afternoon, I went back to where this guy had stood while ordering his drink. And there it was, a small puddle of what looked like black coffee staining the floor just by where he had been standing. That’s when it hit me, I had knocked over his cup with my hand when putting a new one out for him, trying to keep up with the crowd. I was so busy and in such a hurry that I didn't even notice until he walked away looking like he had just jumped into a coffee puddle. I felt terrible about it, but there wasn’t much I could do now except try to be more careful from then on. So here’s my confession: I accidentally spilled coffee on someone and pretended it was an accident of theirs because no one else would ever believe me if they knew how I really messed up.
