The Slack Message that Ruined My Day Off

I've been at this software company for three years now. Everyone knows me as the go-to person for tricky coding problems, and I pride myself on being accessible yet professional. Last Saturday, while enjoying a rare day off, my phone buzzed with an emergency Slack message from my boss asking if I could jump back in to fix an urgent bug that threatened our project deadline. Normally, I'd do anything to help out the team and salvage a project; however, this time was different. I had already made plans with friends for dinner, drinks, and a movie marathon of classic sci-fi films. The guilt gnawed at me as I debated whether to prioritize work or my personal life. After much deliberation, I sent back a message saying it would take me about an hour to get dressed and make the drive into the office, but assured them that once there, I'd do everything in my power to fix the issue. By the time I arrived at the office, everyone was already tense from hours of attempts to resolve the bug. Despite my best efforts, it took four long hours to track down the root cause and roll out a patch. As I packed up and headed home for another sleepless night, exhaustion hit me in waves. When I got back into the comfort zone of my apartment, all I could think about was how that Slack message had ruined what should have been an enjoyable day off. My friends were understanding when I explained later, but I couldn't help feeling like an asshole for spoiling their plans. Is it really okay to prioritize work over your personal life even on days meant to be spent away from the office? Am I the asshole here?
