...When I Couldn't Resist the Urge to Play Store Manager for a Day...
Anonymous Bold Busybody #925 · General
So, this happened at work yesterday, and it's been eating away at me all day. See, I've worked at this little corner store for about six months now. Nothing really exciting ever happens around here, just your standard everyday stuff like ringing up people's groceries, stocking shelves, that kind of thing. But there's one thing that drives me crazy: it feels like the manager never trusts us to do our jobs right. Like, every time we try to give out a discount or something, he swoops in like an eagle and says 'Hold on! Let me do this!' I get why he might be careful with store policy... but seriously? Anyway, yesterday was super slow. It's one of those days where you're just standing there waiting for people to come in, staring at the clock, wondering if anyone will ever show up before your break. And then I noticed something... The manager hadn't shown up yet. He usually gets here around 10:30 AM or so, but it was almost noon and he wasn't here. Now, we're told to follow the rules and never deviate from them... but yesterday? I just couldn't help myself. If this person would have ever let me run things like a normal human being might... well, maybe now was my chance? So I started doing stuff on my own. Like, if someone wanted a discount because they were buying $50 worth of candy, instead of going through the usual song and dance about needing permission from above or something, I just did it. I even tried out some new strategies for stocking shelves, things that seemed to me would make sense in terms of customer flow but probably aren't part of our 'official training.' The day flew by like this. I was actually kind of enjoying myself! And then... the manager finally showed up around closing time. He didn't say anything about what I had done, at least not to me directly. But when I got home and read my messages from work, there was a note saying 'we're reviewing your performance.' I don't know if he noticed or suspected anything... but here's the thing: did I really do something wrong? Am I just too impatient for this kind of stuff? Is it normal to want more control over what happens at my workplace? What would you guys do in a situation like that? Should I have stayed quiet and kept following orders no matter what? Or is there room to think outside the box sometimes, even if it means pushing back against how things are typically done? I'm just... not sure. What do you all think?
