I Gave a Student My Old Phone - Is That Okay?

Last week, I decided to upgrade my old Samsung Galaxy to an iPhone 14. My previous phone was quite outdated and didn't work as smoothly anymore. After making the swap, it occurred to me that this old model might still be useful for someone less tech-savvy but who could benefit from having a reliable device to communicate and access information. In particular, I thought of Alex, one of my students who often struggles with communication due to their family's financial situation. I was hesitant at first, unsure if it would seem like I was crossing boundaries or overstepping as a teacher by offering something so personal. But then I reasoned that if the phone could help bridge some communication gaps for Alex and maybe even encourage better attendance and participation in class, perhaps it wasn't such a bad idea. So, yesterday during lunch break, I discreetly approached Alex with my old device wrapped up nicely as a small gift. To my relief, they were overjoyed by the unexpected present and thanked me profusely. However, this whole episode has left me feeling conflicted. On one hand, I'm glad I could do something to help; on the other hand, there's a part of me that wonders if it might be seen as inappropriate or boundary-crossing. Am I overthinking this? Or is offering such a personal item really crossing a line as a teacher? Is it common for educators to give personal belongings to their students to support them in various ways?
