I Pretended to Be Busy at Work

Today was one of those days where everything felt like a slog. My coworkers were in meetings all morning and afternoon, leaving me with little to do except stare out the window and dream about lunch hour. But I hate it when my boss sees that I’m not busy and assumes I don’t have enough work on my plate, so I pretended to be swamped. I pulled up a blank document and started typing random words, pretending to type an important email or something. It felt silly at the time but also oddly satisfying. When I glanced over at the clock and saw only 15 minutes until lunch, I almost wanted to work harder just so it wouldn’t seem like my day was going nowhere. Now that the workday is over, though, all I can think about is how I’ve been lying for hours. My conscience is bothering me now, but at least I’m on my way home and won’t have to face anyone with questions tomorrow.
