Lost My Cool at Work

Hey, so I work the night shift at this sleepy convenience store. You know how it feels like you're in some kind of dream world when everyone else is sleeping and you’re just there keeping things running smoothly? Well, last night I got a call from my manager, asking me to stay an extra hour because we had one more shipment coming in late. Usually, no big deal, just means another half-hour of chatting with myself or organizing the shelves better than necessary. But this time, it was like someone turned up the heat on every person walking past the store window who happened to look at me. I started feeling really paranoid about a customer seeing me yawning or catching my eyes looking tired and puffy from being awake all night. By the time the delivery truck pulled up, I felt like I was hyperventilating in my headspace, completely out of character for me since I usually handle night work pretty calmly. So when the guy from the delivery company came in, he asked if I had a pen because his order form didn’t have any. I just stared at him for what felt like an eternity before blurting out, “You really need to ask me that?” I don’t think he even heard my answer because his mouth was still open wide as though I’d hit him with a question bolt. I quickly apologized and handed over the pen but man, talk about feeling like you’re living in someone else’s body. It was such an embarrassing moment, especially since he looked so confused and then kind of pitied me when he left. Since then, every time I see someone just standing there innocently at work, a little fear reflex takes hold, it's like they're waiting to spring the next unexpected question on me.
