The Great Lunchroom Snafu

Anonymous Sneaky Scoundrel #217 · General

Alright, so I think everyone knows by now that I'm a bit of a lunch king in my school. You know, the kind who always has the best snacks and is willing to share them with anyone who'll smile at you first. But last week, something happened that made me feel like maybe I'd crossed some invisible line. It all started when this new girl, Lisa, joined our class mid-quarter. She's super sweet but kind of shy, so it took a while for her to open up and start mingling with everyone. Anyway, she came over to chat during lunch one day and asked if I had any spare chips or something, she'd forgotten hers that morning. No problem! I said, handing over my bag full of Cheetos and asking what kind she liked. She picked out some spicy ones, but as she was reaching for them, a small pile of those chips somehow ended up on her shirt. And you know how orange powder can be stubborn... Now, normally when that happens, I'd just laugh it off and tell the person to hit me with their lunch tray because hey, at least they have one, but Lisa looked so shocked and embarrassed. So I tried my best to calm her down by saying something like, “It’s okay! You can just wear a jacket or maybe go wash up.” But she didn’t seem comforted by that. I thought about the incident later when everyone else was back in class, feeling bad but also kind of annoyed. Like, what did I do wrong? It’s not my fault if her shirt isn't Cheeto-proof! Anyway, after a few days went by and Lisa still seemed uncomfortable around me, I decided to approach her one more time. “Hey, look,” I started with the utmost sincerity, “I didn’t mean for that to happen. Can we just pretend it never did?” It was as close as I could get to an apology without actually saying sorry for something I felt like wasn't really my fault. And you know what? She smiled and nodded but still hasn’t been sitting with us at lunch since then. So now, every time someone jokes about how messy I am or if Lisa’s just walking down the hallway with her head bowed, it hits me again, that this could be a bit of my own doing. But hey, at least I tried to make things better? Right?
