My Little Lie to the Principal

Anonymous Wily Scoundrel #246 · General

I've been teaching here for years and always prided myself on being honest with my students and colleagues. But last week, I found myself telling a little white lie to our school principal, something I feel pretty guilty about now. You see, there was this one student who had an uncanny knack for getting into trouble every time she walked through the door. She'd spill paint all over her homework, lose important papers, or somehow manage to break something in class. Her behavior wasn't malicious; it just seemed to happen frequently around her. One day, I got a call from the principal asking me about an incident that had happened earlier and involved broken glass in my classroom. The truth was that one of my students accidentally dropped a beaker during a science experiment, but before I could explain that it wasn't intentional or anything serious, I found myself saying something like, 'Oh, no, that wasn’t her fault at all.' In that moment, I just wanted to protect the girl and make sure she didn't get in trouble. Looking back on it now, though, I wish I had been more honest. I shouldn’t have let my desire to avoid conflict dictate my words. It’s a small thing, but it feels like a step backward for me as an educator.
