So there I was, feeling pretty fed up with all the excuses for why kids weren't showing up to class. One day, I had an idea. You know those pop quizzes that sneak up on students? Well, I decided it would be interesting to test their honesty a bit. I came in one morning and announced we'd have a surprise quiz. The catch? It was all about why they were absent recently. I wanted to see if their reasons really checked out... They looked stunned at first but then some of them got pretty creative with their answers, which actually made me laugh. Others had legitimate excuses that just needed a bit more documentation or proof. While it wasn't exactly the standard spelling and grammar test I usually give, it definitely helped improve attendance... Now when kids know they're going to be called out on their absences, they tend to show up with better preparation for why they've been missing class. It's a little unorthodox but hey, who said teaching was all about the textbooks and worksheets? ...
